Dental Cleaning and Examinations: What We Look For

Regular dental cleaning and examination are essential to maintaining oral health.

Not only are these services used for keeping healthy teeth and gums, but they also give dentists a chance to look for any possible problems such as diseases and cancer

Dentists recommend you visit them for regular dental cleaning every six months. Even if you brush twice daily and floss, you may still have plaque buildup in an unseen part of your mouth.

What happens at dental cleaning and examinations?

Cleaning

Upon arrival, a dental hygienist will clean your teeth. It is easier for the dentist to see problems when your teeth are free of any plaque and tartar.

The hygienist will use tools to scale the teeth. Your teeth are often polished with a gritty paste as it helps to remove any surface stains. Depending on your oral health, the professional may also floss or perform a deep clean on a problem area.

During this time, the hygienist may be searching for any redness or swelling along the gums. They will make not of this to share with the dentist.

Examination

Now that your teeth are clean, the dentist will check every detail about your teeth. They will use a small mirror to make sure each of your teeth has sufficient enamel and dentin. The dentist can see signs that you are unaware of occurring. For example, your teeth may show signs of grinding.

The dentist may tell you to open your mouth wide or to bite down to check your jaw as well as teeth alignment. This is a good time to tell your dentist about any popping or cracking you hear when talking or yawning.

The dentist then moves onto checking the gums. This includes a careful examination of the tongue and throat for any signs of trouble. Your dentist will make a note of any redness or abnormalities. This step is crucial in identifying signs of oral cancer.

The dentist may suggest the use of x-rays to look for any cavities. Not only will the dentist see any cavities, but they can also see how your teeth sit in your jaw. Your dentist will likely show you the images and explain any issues with your teeth, roots or bone structure.

Education

After the cleaning and checking for abnormalities, the dentist will spend several minutes with you to discuss their discoveries.

If nothing important or urgent exists, then you will likely learn more about daily care for your teeth. Some dentists will recommend different products, such as toothpaste for sensitive teeth, depending on the condition of your teeth and gums.

Is it time to see the dentist?

It is crucial that you receive dental cleaning and examinations as recommended by your dentist. It not only helps you keep a vibrant smile, but these visits protect you from developing dangerous health conditions.
