4 Daily Lunch Habits for Healthier Teeth

It is easy to keep good oral habits in the home, but what happens when we are at school or work? Can we eat as well as we do at home and keep our teeth clean? With a few tips, we can.

We can pick up daily lunch habits that will nourish our teeth and prevent cavities from forming.

1. Get refined carbohydrates out of your lunch

Refined foods get digested into sugar right in the mouth, and harmful mouth bacteria use these sugars to produce acids that corrode the enamel.

To keep refined foods out of your lunch, make your sandwiches with whole grain bread. Take it a step further and switch to complex carbohydrates. Complex carbs do not get digested in the mouth, leaving bacteria with less ammunition they can use to harm your teeth.

Keep your carbohydrate intake to a minimum by having more protein in your lunch. Meat, fish or dairy are protein-rich foods that are nutritious, tasty and filling. Proteins can keep you satiated until dinner time so you will not need to snack on sugary treats between meals.

2. Dairy is your friend

Dairy products are rich in calcium and vitamin D, which help build strong teeth and bones. They also keep the mouth healthy in other ways.

Cheese is not only filling and nutritious, but it also neutralizes the acids produced by mouth bacteria. Which means that cheese is a great way to keep cavities at bay. Yogurt contains friendly bacteria that fight harmful mouth bacteria and prevent infections of the teeth and gums.

3. Use crunchy fruits and vegetables to scrub your mouth

A crunchy vegetable salad will scrub plaque from your teeth and gums. So, be adventurous and end your meal with a salad or a few vegetables. Raw carrots, cucumbers, celery and lettuce can be your workplace toothbrush.

These vegetables will also hydrate the mouth and stimulate blood circulation in the gums. Apples work in the same way. They clean and hydrate the mouth, effectively removing bacteria and bad breath.

4. Green leafy vegetables are good for you

People who have risk factors for periodontal disease should up their dosage of folic acid. Kale and spinach have lots of calcium and folic acid, which are thought to protect the mouth from periodontal disease.

Because pregnant women are at higher risk of periodontal disease, green leafy vegetables are particularly good for them and their babies.

5. Indulge your sweet tooth with fruits

For the people who love gummy bears and other candies, this tip is for you. Most sugars are considered bad for the teeth, but fruits are the exception.

Whenever you feel the need for a sweet treat, eat sweet, succulent pineapple or berries. You can have all the fun that candy brings and all the health benefits of fruit.

What is good for your teeth is good for your body
